AX 2012 offers a variety of ways to set up products, but in this blog I will focus on the use of product Attributes. Product Attributes allow a company to add detailed information to products without having to use variants. Attributes can be added to categories and then assigned to products.
Attributes must be assigned an attribute type first. Attribute types define the format of the attribute.
- Go to Product Information Management > Setup > Attributes > Attribute Types
Create a new Attribute Type with the New Button. Enter a name and select the type of information that will be entered: Currency, DateTime, Decimal, Integer, Text, Boolean, or reference. If a Fixed List is required, select the check box and add the values that can be selected.
Next create the desired attributes and attach the appropriate attribute type.
- Go to Product Information Management > Setup > Attributes > Attributes
The product attributes are now ready link to a procurement category.
- Go to Procurement and Sourcing > Setup > Categories > Procurement Categories
Select the desired attributes, linking them to the correct category. The category can be assigned to products and the values can be selected/created.
- Go to Product Information Management > Common > Products > Products
- Hi-light the product that requires attributes.
- Click the Product Categories Button in the Action Pane and select the Procurement Category Hierarchy and the correct category.
The category and associated product attributes are now assigned to the product.
Click Product Attributes Button in the action pane and select values for each of the attributes.
These attributes can now be assigned to any products by adding the correct category.
