Blanket orders help an organization operate more efficiently while reducing transactional overhead costs. Blanket Orders effectively lock in an agreed upon price and reduce the time spent on order entry. By creating large blanket orders and releasing quantities of the order on a periodic basis, organizations can operate with reduced trasactional costs. Without the use of Blanket Orders, users would have to create individual orders for services and/or products that will be repeat orders of an agreed upon price. Dynamics AX functionality and framework have changed greatly from 2009 to 2012, including, but not limited to the abilities within orders.
In AX 2009, Blanket orders are essentially viewed as a different “type” of Sales Order or Purchase Order. This approach restricts flexibility, functionality, and reduces visibility. Blanket orders in AX 2009 only allow for the purchase or sale of specific item at a specific quantity at a specific price. This functionality restricts an enterprise from creating volume specific pricing contracts. Along with the limited functionality, some additional database and table maintenance may be required on the back end.
In AX 2012, the conceptual idea of the Agreement Framework is introduced and replaces the AX 2009 blanket order data model. The new framework allows for commercial agreements between the enterprise and it’s vendors/customers. The agreement framework offers contractual quantity agreements based on item, category, or combination of the two. The framework can help an enterprise enforce price agreements on sales/purchase orders, create agreements based on volume, and manage category based agreements. The agreement framework provides a company with the ability to create flexible and dynamic contractual agreements, while providing the visibility and control not available in AX 2009.
